Website design that works for a small business

A small business website has one job. It has to turn the people who find you into people who get in touch. Everything else, from the colours to the photos, is there to help that happen.

That is how Ben designs every website. He finds out what you do, who your customers are and what they need to see before they call. Then he builds the pages around that, instead of fitting your business into a template.

South Downs Roofing is a good example. A free quote button sits at the top, followed by each service, reviews from customers and photos of finished roofs. A homeowner with a leaking roof can see what they need in seconds.

South Downs Roofing, a family-run roofer in Petersfield, is on our £69 a month Business plan.

What is included in every small business website

Every plan comes with all of this, from the £39 Essential plan upwards.

Designed for you by Ben

Ben designs each website from scratch for the business it belongs to. You approve a preview before anything goes live.

Domain, hosting and SSL

Your web address, fast UK hosting and an SSL certificate, so your website loads securely on https.

Business email

An email address on your own domain, such as hello@yourbusiness.co.uk. It looks far more professional than a Gmail address.

Set up for Google

Rank Math SEO, Google Analytics and Search Console are set up from day one, with proper titles, descriptions and schema on every page.

Built for phones first

Most of your visitors will be on a phone. Every page is built to read well and load fast on a small screen.

Updates made for you

Send us new prices, photos or text and we make the change. You never need to log in or learn any software.

Security and daily backups

Imunify360 blocks malware and bad traffic, and we back up your website every day to a separate data centre.

UK-based support

Help from Ben by phone, email or WhatsApp. No ticket queue in another time zone.

Yours after 12 months

Once your first 12 months are paid, the design, content and files belong to you.

What a small business website needs

We have built websites for small businesses for more than ten years. These are the things that separate a website that brings in work from one that just sits there.

The right pages

Home, About, a page for each service, and Contact. A page per service helps Google match you to what people search for, and helps customers find what they came for.

A clear next step

Every page should make it obvious what to do next: call, message on WhatsApp or ask for a quote. On a phone, the number should dial with one tap.

Reviews where people can see them

Customers read reviews before they call. Put your Google reviews on the pages people read, not hidden away on their own.

The areas you cover

Name your town and the places around it. A page for each area, such as “Plumber in Leeds”, is the best way to show up in local searches.

Speed

Slow pages lose visitors before they have read a word. Google measures speed with its PageSpeed Insights tool, and uses it when it ranks pages.

Real photos and real people

Photos of you, your team and your work beat stock images every time. People buy from people, and a real face builds trust fast.

Websites for every kind of small business

These are the industries we have built the most websites for. Each one needs something different, and we have learned what works.

Trades and construction

Roofers, plasterers, heating engineers and builders. Photos of finished jobs, a page for each area you cover and a quote button that is never more than a tap away. See our websites for tradesmen and construction web design.

Nurseries and childcare

Accountants and professional services

Accountants, consultants and recruiters. A page for every service, your credentials and the testimonials that win new clients. See CityTrust Accounts, or our guide to recruitment website design.

Estate agents and property

Pages for sales, lettings and landlords, a property showcase and valuation forms that bring in instructions. See our websites for estate agents.

Health, fitness and wellbeing

Personal trainers, studios, clinics and therapists. Clear services and prices, with a booking link on every page. See True Fitness Studio.

Online shops

A full shop with products, basket, secure checkout and stock control, added to the Premium plan for a one-off £299. See Prime Trophies.

We work with small businesses of every kind, from dog walkers and churches to charities and community groups.

UbieMAX: tuned for Google PageSpeed Insights

Google measures how fast a page loads with a free tool called PageSpeed Insights. It scores a page out of 100 for performance, and also for accessibility, best practices and SEO. Speed is part of how Google ranks pages, and a slow page loses visitors before they have read a word.

UbieMAX is our speed optimisation, included on the Business and Premium plans. We tune the hosting, images, code and caching on your website so that pages load fast on phones and desktops.

We do not ask you to take our word for it. These are real PageSpeed Insights scores for this website and two of the websites we built and look after, measured on 21 October 2026. Scores move a little from test to test and depend on what is on the page, so run any website through the tool yourself.

Performance scores out of 100 from pagespeed.web.dev, 21 October 2026. Mobile is the harder test, because it simulates a mid-range phone on a slow connection.

Compare the plans in full

Pay monthly, and own it after 12 months

Most small businesses pay for a website in one of two ways. Here is how they compare.

Pay monthly with Ubie

  • Your first payment, from £39, is all you pay to start
  • Design, hosting, email, security and updates in one price
  • The website is yours after 12 months, built on WordPress
  • Best if you want to spread the cost and have it looked after

Pay upfront

  • £500 to £5,000 before anything goes live
  • Hosting, email and changes are usually extra each year
  • Yours from day one
  • Best if you have the budget and someone to maintain it

Ownership is simple. Once your first 12 months are paid, the design, content, files and database are yours. Your plan then carries on month to month at the same price, and if you ever leave, we move the website to you or your new provider.

What small business owners say

How it works

Book a free call

Tell Ben what your business does and what you need. He will tell you which plan fits, with no pressure.

Approve your preview

Ben designs your website and sends you a preview. Ask for any changes before it goes live.

Go live and grow

Most websites are live in under 2 weeks. We host it, back it up and make your changes from then on.

Getting found by customers near you

Most small businesses serve a local area, so most of your customers search with a place name, such as “electrician in Leeds” or “dog groomer near me”. Local search is where a small business website earns its keep.

Location pages

Business includes 5 location pages and Premium includes 15, one for each town or area you cover. Each one tells Google exactly where you work.

Google reviews on your website

On Business and Premium, your Google reviews show on the website and update on their own. You need a Google Business Profile.

Set up properly for search

Titles, descriptions and schema on every page. Premium uses Rank Math Pro and brings every page to a score of 90 or more.

Want to go further? Our Local SEO plans work on your Google Business Profile, your listings and your rankings month by month.

What a small business website costs in the UK

Prices range from a DIY builder at a few pounds a month to an agency build at several thousand. Here is how £39 a month compares. If price is your main worry, our guides to cheap website design and affordable website design go into what you get for the money.

DIY builder and agency figures are typical UK prices, October 2026. Your first year on Essential is 12 months at £39, which is £468.

Support after your website goes live

A website is not finished on launch day. Prices change, staff change and you add new services. Every plan includes someone to look after it.

Someone who knows your website

You deal with Ben, who built it. Call, email or WhatsApp, and talk to the person who knows how it all fits together.

Changes made for you

Essential includes one small update a month. Business and Premium include unlimited updates within fair use, normally up to 2 hours a month.

Looked after in the background

Hosting, software updates, security and daily backups are handled for you, so there is nothing technical to manage.

What to have ready before we start

You do not need a brief. A short call is enough to begin. These things make everything quicker.

A list of your services

What you do, and what you want more of. Each main service can have its own page.

The areas you cover

Your town and the places around it. On Business and Premium these become location pages.

Photos of you and your work

Phone photos are fine. Real photos of you, your team and finished jobs beat stock images.

Your reviews

A link to your Google Business Profile, or any reviews you have collected.

Your logo and colours

Send what you have. If you do not have a logo yet, we can design one as an add-on.

Your domain name

If you already own a web address, we transfer it. If not, we register one for you.
