How to choose a domain name for your business

A useful domain name is easy to recognise, communicate and keep. Before choosing one, think about how customers will hear it on the phone, read it on a vehicle or type it from a business card.

Make it easy to say and spell

Ask someone unfamiliar with the business to write the name after hearing it once. Ambiguous spelling, long strings of words and repeated hyphens create opportunities for mistakes. A name that clearly matches your business is usually more useful than one assembled from search keywords.

Allow room for the business to grow

Consider whether a narrow product or location name will still fit if your services expand. That does not mean every local business needs a broad brand name; it means making the choice deliberately rather than having to undo it later.

Check more than availability

Look for confusingly similar businesses and check the relevant trade mark registers before committing to a brand. An available domain is not proof that a name is legally safe to use. Review the registration and renewal price, rather than judging the cost from a first-year promotion.

Keep control of the registration

  • Know which account holds the domain and who can access it.
  • Use an accessible recovery email and enable strong account protection.
  • Keep billing details current and understand renewal arrangements.
  • Record who manages DNS, website hosting and email.

Already have a working domain?

Do not replace it just because a shorter one becomes available. A change can affect customer recognition, email and existing links. Plan any move with a complete list of old addresses and their appropriate destinations.
